From Tapas to Investments: Insights from My Spanish Sojourn

Madrid is not just a city of art, history, and tapas; it’s also a hub for international business and finance. On a recent trip to Spain's capital, I attended ITA University Masterclass last week, balancing professional commitments with exploring the city's vibrant cultural scene. Here’s how I made the most of my time in Madrid, from networking at the conference, culinary adventures, and local trip to catch up with my colleague in Valencia.

Day 1: Arrival and Conference Kick-Off

I arrived at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport and headed directly to my hotel near the Salamanca district, famous for its high-end shops and refined boulevards. The location was ideal—close to the conference venue and only a short metro ride from the historic center of the city. After checking in, I enjoyed a relaxed afternoon exploring this sophisticated district, taking in its distinct ambiance and remarkable architecture.

Welcome Cocktail at Tatel Madrid

Kicking off the masterclass with a welcome cocktail is the perfect way to set the tone for an event filled with insightful discussions and valuable connections. The cocktail provided a unique opportunity to casually connect with financial advisors from all over the world, breaking the ice before the more formal sessions began.

Day 2: ITA University Masterclass

The masterclass began early at the IE Tower, bringing together financial advisors from around the globe to explore the latest trends in investment management, market insights, and technological advancements. Presentations and panel discussions spanned topics like capital markets, sustainable finance, and customer experience, with IE University professors and industry experts offering valuable insights.

Networking and Insights

During coffee breaks and networking sessions, I connected with financial advisors, exchanging insights and discussing opportunities in the Asian, European, and Latin American markets. It was encouraging to learn that Astra's investment strategies align with industry standards. The lunch at the masterclass was impressive, offering a variety of international dishes with a Spanish flair.

Dinner at Restaurante ‘La Maquina’

After a productive day at the masterclass, we capped off the evening with a memorable dinner at Restaurante La Máquina, hosted by Capital Vision. Located in one of Madrid’s upscale neighborhoods, La Máquina is renowned for its authentic Spanish cuisine and elegant yet inviting atmosphere. What makes this restaurant truly special isn’t just the food; it’s the overall experience—the ambiance, the attention to detail, and the feeling of being immersed in Spain’s rich culinary traditions.

Day 3: Market Outlook and Investment Ideas with Janus Henderson and Franklin Templeton

Day 3 of the masterclass was a standout, as it featured sessions hosted by two of the world’s leading investment firms, Janus Henderson and Franklin Templeton. The agenda was packed with insightful presentations, in-depth discussions, and interactive workshop, all focused on current market trends and advanced investment strategies. The day offered a unique opportunity to learn directly from industry experts, network with peers, and gain practical insights that can be applied to everyday investment decision-making.

A Visit to the Madrid Stock Exchange: Exploring the Heart of Spain’s Financial Markets

After the session, we visited the Madrid Stock Exchange (Bolsa de Madrid), a cornerstone of Spain’s financial markets and one of the oldest stock exchanges in the world. The stock exchange is not just a hub for trading activities but also a symbol of Spain's economic history and development. My visit was more than just a tour; it was an eye-opening experience that offered a deeper understanding of Spain’s financial markets and economic landscape. The stock exchange is not just a place for trading; it is a symbol of Spain’s resilience and adaptability in the face of economic challenges. It reflects the country's ability to integrate tradition with innovation, maintaining its historical roots while embracing the future of finance.

Day 4: A Deep Dive into Structured Products with Capital Vision

The fourth day of my Spain trip featured a highly anticipated business session with Capital Vision, a prominent structured note provider. The session offered an in-depth exploration of structured products, with a focus on their role in portfolio diversification and risk management. BBVA representatives shared valuable insights into the latest trends, product innovations, and strategies that are shaping the landscape of structured investments.

In addition to the insightful presentation, I had the unique opportunity to interview Nans from Capital Vision. The interview provided a deeper understanding of how structured notes can be leveraged for a variety of investment strategies, as well as insights into the latest innovations and trends driving the industry.

Day 5: Catching up with my colleague in Valencia

After a few busy days in Madrid, I set off for Valencia to meet up with my colleague, Adel. The journey began with a morning train from Madrid’s Chamartin Station, the trip from Madrid to Valencia took just under two hours, covering over 300 kilometers in what felt like no time at all. The train ride provided a refreshing break, allowing me to unwind and take in the picturesque Spanish countryside while reflecting on the past few days of the masterclass.

While in Valencia, I was treated to a special lunch hosted by my colleague. It was a delightful change of pace from the usual business meetings and gave us a chance to connect over something different: Hungarian cuisine. Sharing a meal added a personal touch to our professional relationship, and I was eager to experience the flavors and traditions my colleague had to offer.

Final Thoughts

Madrid perfectly blends business and leisure, making it an ideal destination for professionals who want to experience the best of both worlds. Attending the ITA Masterclass was professionally rewarding, and I also enjoyed immersing myself in the city's culture and history. I left with both new business connections and cherished memories. I look forward to my next visit, whether it's for another conference or simply to enjoy this incredible city once more.
